Loose Head Set
The Jeunet is a maintanence casulty right now. Loose headset, which is more of a bother than anything else because a) I don't own a bike stand and b) its a French bike, and is therefore a little weird. I am going to try and find the time tonight to fix it after I mow the lawn, but may actually exacerbate the problem... I forsee lots of swearing and some bruised/scrapped knuckles. The Red Trek is holding up pretty well, needs a few minor adjustments to the front deraileur, and the chain could use a good lube job. Planning on a relaxed 6 miler tonight, for no reason at all.
My girlfriend broke up with me on saturday, but more on that later.

mate - sorry about the GF. speaking from experience, very little good comes out of a break up in the short term, but down the road, its definitely the path meant taken.
ahem. whatever that horseshit fooey is worth.
the headset - loose is not an issue - if that is indeed how you describe it. and you can do whatever needs be without a stand.
my guess is that its a 1" threaded. you need a 32 / 36 mm wrench. loosen the top most "nut", and tighten the bottom. there is probably a slotted washer in between. don't overtighten, a 1/4" turn at a time and check for looseness. to do this, just grab a fistfull of front brake and rock the bike back and forth against itself (easier done than written) - a loose headset will start a knockin' like a jehova witness. when shes good and snug - not too tight (!), simply tighten the top up against the bottom, again, no tighter than you would turn the top on a two liter bottle of coke to keep in the fizz.
you may need to repack the headset, however. easy easy. just take the bearings into your local shop to match size, clean the races and cups real good, lube up well with a good synthetic or PHIL, insert bearings, reassemble, repeat above, and BAM. you just saved yourself $40.
if all else fails, grab a 1" KING off eBay and you'll never have to say headset again.

Bummer on the GF thing, but like my dad always told me the quickest way to get over one GF is to get under another. Crass, but effective.
Hey how are the nano-particles holding up? I just heard a lecture about microbubbles and ultra sound used to break up atherosclerotic plaques in the brain and thought of you.
